Vacillating Faith (even at church—or especially there)

By Chris White

I tremble
                      on a balance ball
                 and endure the burn
           each time doubt leans
                me to the brink.
                       Limbs
                flutter and jerk
            as I exert, teetering
         on either side of belief.
     Minutes turn to weeks,
        strength concedes
             as I fatigue.
             Lifeblood
     teems to muscles
that swell and fortify
with every sway
and reach.
